Amarr builds residential doors under several lines: Lincoln, Classica, Olympus, Stratford, Heritage, and the builder-grade Hillcrest series. Amarr uses a tapered drum on some Classica and Olympus models and a flat drum on most Lincoln and Hillcrest doors, and the two are not interchangeable. The reliable way to identify what you need is to look for the model sticker on the inside of the door section near the bottom panel, or on the edge of the door frame. We recommend OEM Amarr drums when they’re available, because the taper profile is matched to that door’s weight and spring. For cables, a quality aftermarket equivalent with the same diameter and length performs the same and costs less. Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• Frayed or unraveling cable. You’ll see loose steel strands peeling away from the cable near the drum or at the bottom bracket. This is the number one warning sign. The cable holds the door’s weight on one side, and once strands start breaking, the failure is days away, not weeks.
• Door hangs crooked in the opening. When one cable stretches or slips, that side of the door drops lower than the other. A crooked door means one cable is doing more work than the other, and the overloaded side fails next.
• Scraping or grinding when the door moves. A worn drum can’t guide the cable evenly, so the cable rides up the drum edge and scrapes against the track or the drum’s mounting plate. You’ll hear it before you see it.
• Visible wear groove on the drum. The drum’s groove should be smooth and consistent. If it’s grooved deeper on one side or showing flat spots, the cable is chewing into it with every cycle.
• Cable has come off the drum entirely. If the cable is wound loose around the torsion tube or hanging free, the door may still open on one side but it’s unstable. This is a dangerous condition because the other cable and the torsion spring are still under tension.

Here’s the honest split. If you want to document the failure, you can safely photograph the frayed cable and the drum with your phone while the door is closed. That’s useful: it tells you what you’re looking at and gives you something to compare against when a technician quotes the job. You can also check whether the cable is frayed or fully snapped. What you should not do is attempt to replace the cable or drum yourself. Both parts are under tension from the torsion spring, and that spring holds enough stored energy to cause serious injury if it releases while you’re working near the torsion tube. The cable isn’t the dangerous part. The spring it’s connected to is.
